Scale selection on a radar display determines how much of the environment is shown and how clearly targets are represented. By choosing a range, you decide how far out the display covers, and by setting the resolution, you decide how finely targets that are close together can be distinguished. When the scale matches the mission or situation, targets appear at accurate distances and with enough separation to be tracked reliably, which keeps your awareness of what’s in the air or sea up to date.

If the scale is set too broadly, many contacts may look tiny and cluttered, making it hard to separate two nearby targets or to notice small but important contacts. If the scale is too narrow, distant targets disappear from the display or appear oversized relative to nearby ones, reducing your ability to monitor the overall picture and potentially missing threats outside the immediate area. So, the right balance of range and resolution is essential for meaningful, actionable situational awareness.
